In my class' most recent unit, Artists Solve Problems', we have been, well, solving problems. The problems we were faced with came in a variety of activities such as Rube Goldberg machines, creating towers out of nothing but newspaper, and others. My favorite of these was probably the newspaper towers project. Our class was organized into teams of 5, then were given one roll of masking tape and newspaper, and we had to build the tallest tower we could by only using those materials and no tape strip could be more than 6" long.
As I mentioned in my last post, I am working on a sticky note mosaic of Rene Magritte's 'The Son of Man'. I am about halfway done, and approaching the point at which my project was ripped down last time. Right now, the project (right) only needs painted squares, so it may take longer to do than the previous half of the project. Also, my previous partners have left, so instead of 4 people doing work, it is down to 1. We are currently in a unit titled 'Artists Solve Problems'. The unit is self-explanatory. We solve problems with our artwork. I was able to continue my mosaic because having it torn down was a problem. Also, using only sticky notes to create the final image is a limitation that I have to work with. In the end, this should look like a blown up template. (left) Over the past few weeks, my Art 1 class has been working on an art project centered on the idea that artists steal. I had been working on a 6.25'x5.75' sticky note mosaic of Rene Magritte's 'The Son of Man' (right). Unfortunately, a day before the end of the unit, my work was ripped off the wall, torn up and someone scribbled profanity all over the mosaic. Although I have restarted and expect to finish for the next unit 'Artists solve Problems', I do not have a picture to post of the mosaic. Instead I have a template by which I am using to create the giant mosaic. At the beginning of this unit, we answered some questions about "stealing artwork". I would like to re-address one question that I was asked 'Is copying ok?'. I had originally claimed that copying is never ok, as that would be plagiarizing. I now realize that, when dealing with art, as long as the artist copying is not completely ripping off the original art, but rather taking it and changing some aspect of it, it is fine to copy in art. Although I have not gotten a picture of my project so far, I do, as I had stated above, have the template. (left). I believe that the merit of the image is not the picture itself, as it is with the original painting, but rather the medium and scale of my mosaic. I expect to have the mosaic finished in the next few weeks and will upload the finished product when it is complete. |
