For the past few weeks in art class, our class has been making artwork inspired by pieces on display at the North Carolina museum of art. I noticed a lot of the statues, especially Greek statues, were all quadruple amputees. I decided to make a satire of this, and attempted to make something of the same texture, accept it was the limbs that were not present on the statues on display. I had originally also planned on doing a face, as many of the statues did not have heads, but I found making a human face out of plaster was too difficult and I left it at 2 arms and 1 very poorly crafted foot. Unlike the Greek quadruple amputees, which are made of marble, I had no access to marble, nor do I have any idea how to chisel it, so I make it out of plaster, which means that mine are hollow and have not nearly as much detail, and up close look very plain, however I do not think the merit in this piece was the craftsmanship, but rather it’s satirical value.

I think you nailed it. Many times people look at art to see what it has.. you looked at art and saw what was missing. Having a pile of limbs is both funny and also sort of disturbing. I think the choice of plaster was a good one because it looks similar enough to marble that anyone viewing the work gets the idea.
